ANC and DA Pledge Renewed Cooperation in Government of National Unity

Following weeks of public disputes and political tension, the African National Congress (ANC) and Democratic Alliance (DA) have reaffirmed their commitment to working together under South Africa’s Government of National Unity (GNU). The parties acknowledged that effective governance requires stronger collaboration and mutual respect, despite their differences.

The agreement comes after two months of strained relations marked by disagreements over cabinet appointments, policy directions, and parliamentary committee leadership. A closed-door meeting in Pretoria, facilitated by President Cyril Ramaphosa, helped ease tensions and refocus efforts on governance priorities.

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula stressed the need to move beyond political squabbles. “Our responsibility is to serve the people, not engage in endless debates. South Africans expect service delivery, and that remains our focus,” he said. DA leader John Steenhuisen struck a similar tone, stating, “While we have had disagreements, the country’s stability and progress must come first. We are committed to finding workable solutions.”

Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that both parties agreed to reduce public confrontations and concentrate on shared objectives, including economic recovery, crime prevention, and job creation. Ramaphosa’s mediation reportedly played a key role in preventing further escalation.

Political analysts, however, remain cautious about the GNU’s long-term viability. “The ANC and DA have fundamentally different ideologies,” noted political analyst Nompumelelo Hlope. “Public displays of unity are a start, but translating that into cohesive policy implementation will require continuous compromise.”

For South Africans weary of political instability, the renewed commitment offers tentative hope. As Parliament prepares to resume next week, attention will shift to whether the GNU can translate promises into tangible results. Its ability to tackle urgent challenges—such as unemployment and crime—will determine public confidence in the coalition.

The GNU’s fragile nature highlights the complexities of coalition governance in a divided political landscape. With both parties now publicly committed to cooperation, the coming months will test their capacity to reconcile differences and deliver meaningful progress for the nation.
