Four years after Anele Tembe’s fatal fall from the 10th floor of Cape Town’s Pepperclub Hotel, her family continues to seek clarity about the events leading to her death. The 22-year-old, engaged to rapper AKA (Kiernan Forbes) at the time, died on 11 April 2021—just hours after a reported altercation with the musician.
The Final Hours
Tembe and AKA were staying at the luxury hotel following his performance in the city. According to When Love Kills author Melinda Ferguson, the night was marked by heavy partying, with allegations of alcohol, drugs, and infidelity fueling tensions between the couple.
Ferguson’s account suggests Tembe—reportedly on psychiatric medication—had consumed mood-altering substances before an explosive argument erupted over AKA’s interactions with female fans and his ex, DJ Zinhle. The confrontation allegedly escalated, with AKA claiming he left to book another room (though records dispute this). Upon returning, the fight continued until Tembe, in a distressed state, removed her clothes and fell from the balcony while AKA was in the bathroom.
Controversial Aftermath
Eyewitnesses reported that Tembe survived for 20 minutes after the fall, blinking in response to a bystander. Yet, AKA did not go to her. Instead, he retreated to a friend’s room and ordered tequila—a detail her father, Moses Tembe, called “unthinkable” in Ferguson’s book.
“Who doesn’t rush to help the woman they love?” Moses questioned. “She wasn’t dead yet.”
Unresolved Theories
While authorities ruled Tembe’s death a suicide, Ferguson presented an alternative scenario: that AKA may have pushed her, accidentally or intentionally, during the altercation. The Tembe family has long doubted the official narrative, insisting their daughter had been trying to leave the toxic relationship.
AKA’s Own Violent End
Two years after Tembe’s death, AKA was assassinated in a Durban shooting that also claimed the life of his friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane. Seven suspects are set to stand trial next month, but the rapper’s death has only deepened the mystery surrounding both tragedies.
A Family’s Wait for Justice
As the fourth anniversary of Tembe’s passing arrives, her loved ones remain haunted by unanswered questions. With no conclusive findings from the inquest and AKA’s murder trial pending, the full truth behind that night at the Pepperclub Hotel may never be known.
For now, the haunting parallels between these two high-profile deaths continue to fuel speculation—and a desperate search for closure.
