A collision between a cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle and a truck on the R40 near Riverside Mall early Tuesday morning resulted in one fatality and left two others with serious injuries.
Dashcam footage shared on social media captures the CIT van striking the back of a heavy-duty truck at high speed. The front of the van was severely damaged, highlighting the intensity of the crash.
First responders reported that one guard died instantly, while the driver and another passenger sustained critical injuries and were trapped in the wreckage. Rescue teams used the Jaws of Life to free them.
Tragically, one of the injured guards later died in the hospital despite paramedics’ efforts.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but preliminary observations suggest the CIT driver may have been distracted, as the vehicle did not slow down or show brake lights before impact.
SBV Services’ group CEO, Mark Barrett, shared his condolences over the loss. “I am deeply saddened that one of our employees has passed away as a result of this accident. On behalf of everyone at SBV, I wish to extend our sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, and colleagues,” he said.
The accident caused significant traffic delays on the R40, with debris and vehicle parts strewn across the roadway.
