The kidnapping trial of six-year-old Joshlin Smith has become one of South Africa’s most closely watched court cases, exposing deep-seated issues of child safety, policing failures, and community mistrust in Saldanha Bay.
Joshlin disappeared from her Middelpos home on February 19, 2024, sparking a nationwide search and exposing shocking allegations about her mother’s involvement. The case took a dramatic turn when Joshlin’s mother, Racquel “Kelly” Smith, and her boyfriend Jacquen “Boeta” Appollis were arrested alongside three others on charges including kidnapping and human trafficking.
