Alleged Secret Meetings Between Gauteng Premier Lesufi and Zuma Spark ANC Leadership Crisis Fears

In a development that has sent shockwaves through South African politics, reports have surfaced alleging that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has been holding secret meetings with former President Jacob Zuma to strategize a challenge against President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership within the African National Congress (ANC). The alleged clandestine discussions have fueled speculation about a brewing power struggle within the ruling party, raising concerns about the ANC’s stability and unity.

According to sources close to the matter, Lesufi—a prominent figure in Gauteng politics—has reportedly aligned with Zuma to form a faction aimed at weakening Ramaphosa’s grip on the ANC. The discussions are said to focus on strategies to rally support against Ramaphosa, particularly ahead of future leadership elections.

A source familiar with the meetings revealed, “Panyaza has become increasingly frustrated with Ramaphosa’s handling of key issues, including corruption and economic reforms. He believes the party needs stronger leadership, and Zuma is advising him on how to mobilize support for change.”

The ANC has moved swiftly to dismiss the allegations, with party spokesperson Pule Mabe labeling them as “fabrications.” Mabe reiterated that the ANC remains united under Ramaphosa’s leadership and called for focus on addressing South Africa’s pressing socio-economic challenges rather than internal divisions.

Several senior ANC officials have also denied the existence of any plot, emphasizing the need for unity within the party. However, the allegations have already stirred unease among ANC members, with some expressing concerns over Lesufi’s growing influence and ambitions.

Lesufi’s rise within the ANC, particularly in Gauteng, has positioned him as a key player in the party. His alleged collaboration with Zuma has raised eyebrows, with some fearing it could destabilize the ANC further. A senior ANC official, speaking anonymously, stated, “Lesufi is ambitious, and his rise in Gauteng has made him a key player. If these reports about a partnership with Zuma are true, it could destabilize the ANC further.”

Despite being ousted from the presidency in 2018, Jacob Zuma remains a influential figure within the ANC, with his loyalists—often referred to as the “Zuma faction”—retaining significant sway in party structures. His alleged involvement in a scheme to challenge Ramaphosa has heightened fears of deepening divisions within the ANC, potentially sparking a leadership crisis.

Political analyst John Matiso commented, “Zuma’s influence, coupled with Lesufi’s ambitions, could create a formidable alliance. If the ANC leadership becomes fragmented, it risks further alienating its voter base, which is already dwindling due to corruption scandals and poor governance.”

The alleged power struggle comes at a critical juncture for the ANC, which is already grappling with declining public support and internal challenges. Analysts warn that infighting could exacerbate these issues, undermining the party’s ability to govern effectively.

“If these divisions aren’t addressed, the ANC risks losing credibility,” Matiso added. “The public wants stability, and another leadership battle could push voters away.”

As speculation continues to mount, all eyes are on Lesufi and Zuma’s next moves. If the allegations prove true, South Africa could face renewed political instability, with significant consequences for the ANC and the country’s leadership trajectory.

The situation remains fluid, and the coming months are likely to reveal whether Lesufi and Zuma’s alleged plans will materialize or if Ramaphosa’s leadership will withstand the challenge. In the meantime, the ANC’s ability to present a united front will be closely scrutinized as South Africans await clarity on the party’s future.
