Zuma’s Legal Team Calls for Prosecutor Billy Downer’s Removal Over Alleged Misconduct

The legal battle between former President Jacob Zuma and prosecutor Billy Downer has escalated, with Zuma’s legal team pushing for Downer’s removal, claiming that his alleged misconduct undermines the integrity of the ongoing corruption trial.

Advocate Dali Mpofu, representing Zuma, argued during a recent court hearing that Downer’s actions were driven by malice rather than a genuine pursuit of justice. Mpofu insisted that if it can be proven that Downer acted with bad intentions, it would justify removing him from the corruption trial.

The trial revolves around allegations that Zuma was involved in a bribery scandal connected to the multi-billion-rand arms deal. Zuma maintains his innocence and claims that Downer has shown bias and personal animosity toward him, compromising his right to a fair trial.

Zuma’s legal team has accused Downer of leaking confidential information to the media and behaving in ways that violate legal standards. Mpofu contended that Downer’s alleged misconduct could negatively affect the fairness of the proceedings and called for an independent investigation into his conduct.

“If our allegations are proven, they are serious enough to warrant the removal of the prosecutor,” Mpofu told the court. “This is not just about replacing a prosecutor; it’s about ensuring that personal vendettas do not obstruct justice.”

The defense argues that Downer’s continued involvement could compromise Zuma’s right to a fair trial. They believe an investigation into Downer’s conduct is essential to protect the credibility of the legal process.

The state, however, has rejected these claims, asserting that there is no evidence to support the accusation that Downer acted with malicious intent. Downer himself has denied any wrongdoing and maintains that his actions are consistent with his responsibilities as a prosecutor.

The case has attracted widespread public attention, highlighting tensions within South Africa’s judicial system. Zuma’s defense team continues to challenge Downer’s impartiality, and the outcome of this legal battle could have significant implications not only for Zuma’s case but also for the broader justice system in South Africa.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the allegations against Downer will be substantiated and if they will lead to changes in the way the trial is conducted.
