The ANC-led KwaDukuza Local Municipality has confirmed a substantial financial loss following the theft of funds from its ABSA bank account last Friday.

The incident came to light after the MK Party publicly exposed the theft, forcing the municipality to acknowledge the breach. Attempts to keep the matter under wraps failed after the leak surfaced.

Although the municipality has not yet revealed the exact amount stolen, sources within the MK Party and other insiders claim that nearly R30 million was siphoned off through multiple transactions.

NEWS: The ANC-run KwaDukuza local municipality in KwaZulu-Natal has officially confirmed that money was stolen from its ABSA bank on Friday last week.

The municipality tried to keep the matter under the carpet until the MK Party in the province went public about it.

In response, the municipality has called for an urgent special council meeting scheduled for tomorrow to assess the extent of the loss and chart a way forward. The actual amount stolen is expected to be confirmed during this session.

Municipal spokesperson Thobeka Ndlovu assured residents that authorities are working closely with the bank and law enforcement agencies to investigate the theft and recover the funds.

“The situation is being treated with the utmost seriousness. We are collaborating with financial institutions and security experts to determine how this breach occurred and ensure those responsible are held accountable,” said Ndlovu.

The MK Party has strongly criticized the municipality for its initial attempt to conceal the incident. “This kind of financial mismanagement and lack of transparency erodes public trust. We demand full accountability and immediate corrective action,” said an MK Party representative.

KwaDukuza residents have expressed outrage and concern, questioning the safety of municipal funds and the potential impact on service delivery.

As investigations continue, the public is anxiously awaiting the outcome of the special council meeting, hoping for transparency, accountability, and measures to prevent future financial breaches.
