A tragic case of domestic violence unfolded in Bloemfontein on Saturday night when 37-year-old Rebecca Mokoena was fatally stabbed by her husband in their home. Reports suggest the incident was triggered after the husband allegedly found Mokoena in a compromising position with their neighbour.

The couple’s three-year-old child was reportedly asleep on the floor in the same room throughout the ordeal. The neighbour, who sustained minor injuries, managed to escape and is currently recovering.

Sergeant Lefa Nthako, spokesperson for the Free State police, confirmed that the husband, a man in his forties, was apprehended near the scene. He now faces charges of murder and attempted murder.

Paramedics who arrived at the scene found Mokoena unresponsive and, despite resuscitation efforts, she was pronounced dead. Social workers have since stepped in to care for the child, who was unharmed but is receiving counselling services to help cope with the trauma.

Community members expressed shock and sorrow, describing the couple’s relationship as troubled but not anticipating such a violent outcome. “We knew they had issues, but we never thought it would come to this,” said a neighbour who wished to remain anonymous.

The incident underscores the ongoing crisis of domestic violence in South Africa, where disputes often escalate into fatal tragedies. Advocacy groups, including a local gender-based violence organization represented by spokeswoman Thandi Mbatha, have called for increased efforts to address the root causes of household disputes.

“This heartbreaking event highlights how unresolved personal conflicts can spiral out of control,” Mbatha said. “Communities must seek help and intervention to prevent violence.”

The suspect is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court later this week. Police have appealed to witnesses, including the injured neighbour, to assist in the ongoing investigation.
