Renowned South African artist Makhadzi has addressed the controversy surrounding the burning of an event stage in Makwassie, North West, following her absence from a highly anticipated performance. The incident, which left fans frustrated and escalated into chaos, has sparked widespread speculation about the reasons behind her no-show.
In a statement released by Makhadzi Entertainment, the artist clarified that her withdrawal was due to a breach of contract by the event promoter. The promoter reportedly failed to settle the full payment for her performance within the agreed-upon 14-day period, despite paying an initial deposit. Additionally, an extra R3,000 fee for a promotional video remained unpaid.
“Despite multiple reminders and attempts to resolve the matter amicably, the promoter failed to honor the financial obligations. As a result, we were left with no choice but to withdraw Makhadzi’s participation from the event,” the statement read.
Frustrated attendees, unaware of the payment dispute, expressed their anger by setting the stage equipment on fire. Videos of the incident went viral, showing flames engulfing the setup. While no injuries were reported, the event organizers faced widespread criticism for failing to communicate clearly with ticket holders about Makhadzi’s absence.
Makhadzi’s team emphasized that they are not responsible for the financial losses or unrest caused by the incident. “Makhadzi values her fans deeply and always strives to honor her commitments. However, professionalism and adherence to agreements are crucial to ensure successful events,” the statement added.
The identity of the promoter has not been disclosed, and they have yet to respond to the allegations made by Makhadzi Entertainment.
Fans have reacted with mixed emotions. Many sympathized with Makhadzi, highlighting the importance of respecting artists’ contractual terms, while others called for greater transparency and improved communication to prevent such misunderstandings.
Makhadzi reassured her fans of her dedication to delivering exceptional performances and urged event organizers to uphold their responsibilities. “I love my fans and will always work towards making them proud. Let this be a lesson for better coordination in the future,” she concluded.
As investigations into the stage-burning incident continue, the entertainment industry is reminded of the critical importance of professionalism, clear communication, and mutual respect in ensuring smooth collaborations.
