Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Member of Parliament Carl Niehaus has vowed to remain with the party despite receiving death threats.

In an interview with The Citizen on Thursday, Niehaus revealed that he has heightened security measures for himself and his family following threats on social media and through anonymous phone calls.

“They are sending me WhatsApp messages, telling me they will mess me up,” Niehaus said. “I used to enjoy posting about my children, but I’ve had to stop doing that.”

Niehaus disclosed that some of his attackers have labeled him a pedophile due to his marriage to a younger black woman. However, he believes the majority of the hostility stems from his political decisions, particularly his steadfast support for the EFF while others have departed.

“I’ve expressed certain views about the MK party, and some people don’t like that. They are unhappy that I’m in the EFF and refuse to leave,” he said.

Despite the pressure, Niehaus is adamant about staying in the EFF. “I will not leave the EFF because of its policies and the way it has treated me. The party has treated me exceptionally well,” he stated.

Niehaus also noted that some members of the MK party have insinuated that he deserves the threats he’s receiving. “Why would they say such things? It makes me wonder if they are not behind this,” he added.

Critics have questioned Niehaus’s continued affiliation with the EFF, especially after he did not secure a position on its Central Command Team (CCT). However, Niehaus insists he does not feel entitled to any role within the party.

“I’ve been a member of the EFF for a year and represent it in parliament. I’ve been embraced by the rank and file of the party,” he said.

Niehaus highlighted his longstanding relationship with EFF leader Julius Malema, recalling their history dating back to Malema’s teenage years. “I remember him as a young man attending Chris Hani’s funeral. He’s always been intelligent, and I believe he will one day be South Africa’s president,” Niehaus said.

Looking ahead, Niehaus is considering legal action against individuals who have targeted him with abuse online.
