AmaZulu FC have officially announced the signing of former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu on a free transfer. The 32-year-old has been without a club since leaving Sundowns following the expiration of his contract on June 30, 2024.
Zungu had been heavily linked with a move to Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, where he was expected to reunite with his former coach at Sundowns, Rulani Mokwena. However, negotiations between the two parties fell through, leading to his surprise move to AmaZulu.
On Monday evening, Usuthu confirmed Zungu’s permanent signing, much to the midfielder’s excitement. Zungu expressed his delight at joining the KwaZulu-Natal-based side, and his arrival is expected to bring valuable experience and leadership to the team.
With his signing, Zungu adds depth to AmaZulu’s midfield, and the club will be hoping his winning mentality and experience will help push them up the league standings in the upcoming season.
Why He Chose AmaZulu Over Other Offers
Zungu attributed his decision to the allure of AmaZulu’s coaching duo, Arthur Zwane and Vusi Vilakazi, as well as his desire to bring his experience to the team. “My personal goal is to help the team climb as high as possible on the log table, assist the younger players, and bring my experience to the squad,” Zungu said in a club statement.
“Everywhere I’ve played, I’ve managed to win trophies, and I want to bring that same winning mentality here. I know what it takes to win, and that’s my aim,” he added.
Zungu had been training under Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena, sparking speculation of a possible move to Wydad. However, a deal could not be finalized, leading the seasoned midfielder to AmaZulu.
The new Usuthu signing expressed his excitement about working with Zwane and Vilakazi, noting their modern approach to football. “I’ve watched AmaZulu’s games, and the team plays the modern game. My understanding of the game will help the team, but I know I have to work hard to earn my place,” Zungu said.
Zungu joins AmaZulu alongside fellow new signing Sandile Mthethwa as the club looks to strengthen its squad for the ongoing season. His addition is expected to bring a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to the team, aiming to elevate AmaZulu’s performance and standings in the league.
