Zuma Faces Criticism for Suggesting Late Advocate Should Shoulder R28.9M Legal Bill

Former President Jacob Zuma has come under fire after suggesting that his late corruption trial advocate should be held responsible for the R28.9 million legal bill that state officials have been directed to recover from him. The comment has drawn sharp criticism, with many questioning Zuma’s refusal to accept accountability for the costs.

COURT-ORDERED REPAYMENT OF LEGAL FEES

The controversy stems from a January move by the State Attorney and the Presidency to compel Zuma to repay nearly R29 million spent by the state on his legal defense. This action followed a 2022 Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) ruling ordering the recovery of the funds.

The funds, paid to cover Zuma’s legal battles related to long-standing corruption charges, have been a focal point of public debate. The SCA’s ruling explicitly required Zuma to take personal responsibility for these legal expenses, rejecting any argument that the state should bear the burden.

SHIFTING BLAME TO THE LATE ADVOCATE

Zuma’s recent remarks attempting to shift responsibility to his late advocate have sparked outrage. Critics have labeled the suggestion as an attempt to evade accountability, highlighting what they see as a pattern of deflection in Zuma’s response to legal challenges.

Political analyst Ralph Mathekga noted:
“This reflects a consistent effort by Zuma to avoid personal liability for actions taken during his tenure, despite clear judicial directives.”

PUBLIC AND POLITICAL BACKLASH

Political figures, analysts, and members of the public have criticized Zuma’s statement. Many argue that his comments undermine the principle of accountability, particularly concerning the misuse of public funds.

A senior ANC official, speaking anonymously, remarked:
“Blaming a deceased advocate for a legal bill linked directly to his corruption charges is not only irresponsible but also disrespectful to the judicial process.”

ONGOING LEGAL BATTLE

As the state continues efforts to recover the legal fees, questions remain about Zuma’s willingness to comply with court rulings. The legal wrangling over the funds has become emblematic of broader concerns about accountability for public officials in South Africa.

LEGACY AND CONTINUING CONTROVERSIES

Zuma’s attempt to shift blame has reignited debates about the legacy of his leadership and his approach to legal and ethical responsibilities. For many, the saga serves as a reminder of the financial and institutional challenges that defined his presidency.

Whether Zuma will ultimately be compelled to repay the funds remains uncertain, but the backlash to his remarks underscores growing frustration with his repeated efforts to deflect responsibility.
