KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is set to appear at the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Monday as a group of young suspects, dubbed “thugs,” face charges following their arrest. The group gained infamy after a viral video showed them brandishing firearms and firing shots recklessly at the KwaMashu hostel.

Provincial police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda revealed that detectives specializing in serious and violent crimes in KwaMashu have connected the suspects to a shocking series of offenses. These include 11 murder cases, eight counts of attempted murder, three hijackings, two truck-jackings, and four armed and house robberies.

The crimes reportedly took place across various parts of KwaMashu, with hijackings primarily occurring along the Dumisani Makhaye Highway.

The suspects’ arrest and upcoming court appearance mark a critical step in addressing violent crime in the area. Their actions have not only left a trail of devastation but have also underscored the challenges police face in curbing crime in KwaZulu-Natal.

Authorities hope the court proceedings will bring justice to the victims and serve as a deterrent to others involved in violent criminal activities.
