Miss South Africa 2024, Mia Le Roux, has addressed her withdrawal from the Miss Universe pageant, citing personal challenges that made competing in the event unfeasible.

On Friday, the Miss South Africa Organisation confirmed that Mia would not participate in the competition, currently being held at Arena CDMX in Mexico City, due to health concerns. The announcement spurred widespread speculation, prompting Mia to speak out about her struggles in a heartfelt TikTok video shared by user @queenlyview.

Overcoming Unique Challenges

Mia revealed that as someone with cochlear implants, she faced significant difficulties keeping up with the intense music and dance routines required for the competition.

“I’m supposed to be able to follow music, which I can’t do like other people who have cochlear implants. Those who can dance have had practice and learned different ways to follow,” Mia explained.

She also described feeling overwhelmed during group practice sessions due to the lack of consideration from some fellow contestants.

“When I tried to practice with all the girls, everyone was very loud and talking, and I couldn’t follow. It was a lot. I felt inadequate,” she admitted.

Broadcast Change Sparks Viewer Disappointment

In a related update, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) announced that the S3 channel would no longer air this year’s Miss Universe pageant due to Mia’s withdrawal.

S3 Publicity Manager Caroline Phalakatshela stated, “S3 regrets to inform viewers that due to Miss Universe South Africa Mia Le Roux’s withdrawal, the channel will not broadcast this year’s contest.” The channel extended its well-wishes to Mia and apologized for the last-minute programming change.

Public Support and Recovery
Despite the disappointment, many South Africans have expressed support for Mia, commending her courage in prioritizing her well-being and raising awareness about the unique challenges faced by individuals with cochlear implants.

Mia has yet to announce her next steps, but her story has sparked important conversations about inclusivity in global competitions.
