Busisiwe Mkhwebane Surprised by EFF Backlash Following Resignation, Reflects on Future Political Path

Former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Member of Parliament (MP), Busisiwe Mkhwebane, has expressed surprise at the mixed reactions she has received from EFF members after her recent resignation from the party. Mkhwebane, who briefly served in Parliament under the EFF banner, stated that she was taken aback by the level of discontent and criticism from some within the party’s ranks following her departure.

In a statement addressing her resignation, Mkhwebane acknowledged the variety of responses but admitted that the backlash from certain EFF members caught her off guard. “I didn’t expect some of the reactions I received. I thought I would be met with understanding, but it seems my decision has not sat well with everyone,” she said.

Mkhwebane, the former Public Protector of South Africa, joined the EFF after her turbulent exit from the Public Protector’s office, where her tenure was marked by several high-profile investigations and controversies. Her bold stance on corruption and willingness to challenge government leaders led some to see her move to the EFF as a natural progression. However, her time with the party was brief, and her resignation has prompted speculation about her future political ambitions.

In her resignation statement, Mkhwebane thanked the EFF for the opportunity to serve but hinted at personal and political differences that influenced her decision to leave. “My resignation does not change my respect for the party or its leadership. However, sometimes circumstances change, and one must make decisions based on personal conviction,” she said.

Some EFF members expressed disappointment at Mkhwebane’s departure, while others were more critical, questioning her commitment to the party’s cause. Insiders suggested that her resignation reflected poorly on the party, particularly in the run-up to the 2024 general elections. There were also accusations that Mkhwebane used the EFF as a platform to regain political relevance after her controversial tenure as Public Protector.

In response to the criticism, Mkhwebane defended her integrity, reaffirming her respect for the EFF’s principles and mission. She explained that her decision was not taken lightly, and while she did not disclose specific reasons for her departure, it is believed that both personal and political factors played a role.

As she steps away from the EFF, speculation is growing about Mkhwebane’s next political move. Some analysts suggest she may form her own political platform, while others believe she could align with other opposition parties. For now, Mkhwebane remains tight-lipped, saying she will take time to reflect on her political journey before making any concrete decisions.

Her departure has added to the complexities of South Africa’s political landscape, and observers will be closely watching to see what direction this controversial former MP takes next.
