Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber Urges Citizens to Switch to Smart ID Cards Amidst Fraud Concerns

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber is calling on South Africans to switch from the traditional green ID book to the more secure smart ID card. Schreiber emphasized that the green ID book is highly susceptible to fraud, and urged citizens to adopt the newer smart ID system as part of the government’s efforts to combat identity theft and other forms of fraud.

The push for smart IDs comes as the Department of Home Affairs undertakes significant reforms to the country’s visa regime. These changes are designed to streamline the immigration process, reduce administrative bottlenecks, and curb corruption within the system. By making the hiring process for skilled workers easier and more efficient, the department aims to boost the country’s economic growth and address critical skill shortages.

The smart ID card, with its enhanced security features, is a key part of the broader strategy to modernize South Africa’s identification system and reduce vulnerabilities to fraudulent activities. As the government continues its efforts to reform and strengthen administrative processes, Schreiber’s call for citizens to upgrade their ID documents reflects the growing need for a more secure and efficient identification system in South Africa.
