Former KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu has officially announced his resignation from the African National Congress (ANC), marking a significant departure from the party he once served.

In a statement addressed to the Ward 33 branch secretary in eThekwini, Mchunu referred to a previous message he had shared with some ANC leaders regarding his views on the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU) after the May 29 elections. He noted that his opinions on the matter had sparked what he described as “destructive criticism” against him within the party.

Reflecting on the current political direction of the ANC, Mchunu explained that he no longer feels he is contributing to the party’s mission or values. After careful analysis, he believes his presence is no longer adding value to the ANC’s efforts.

Mchunu also expressed deep disappointment in the ANC’s waning commitment to advancing the National Democratic Revolution, which he views as essential to improving the lives of the working class and the poor. He concluded by stating that he has lost faith in the party’s ability to uphold these principles.
