Minister of Correctional Services, Dr Pieter Groenewald, has accepted the findings of the Public Protector’s report regarding Thabo Bester’s 2022 escape.
In response, officials implicated in the delayed reporting of the incident have been reassigned and issued final written warnings. While acknowledging the lapse in their response, Dr Groenewald emphasized the crucial role of G4S, the security company responsible for Bester, in the escape.
He has pledged to implement stricter measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
