In the aftermath of the closely contested Betway Premiership match between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns on September 28, South African Football Association (SAFA) Head of Referees Abdul Ebrahim has provided an update regarding the officiating, particularly surrounding a controversial disallowed goal that has sparked debate among fans and analysts alike.

During the match held at the FNB Stadium, reigning PSL Referee of the Season Sikhumbuzo Gasa faced criticism for his performance, particularly in relation to the interpretation of the offside rule. Many observers noted that Gasa and his officiating team struggled to keep pace with the high intensity of the game, leading to questions about the accuracy of their decisions.

When approached for comment, Ebrahim acknowledged that there were several incidents from the match that would be subject to review by SAFA’s referees review committee. “The referees did very well, and the review will do the necessary, and then, in the week, we will get the reports,” Ebrahim stated. He emphasized that while the referees performed admirably, there would inevitably be situations requiring further examination.

Regarding the disallowed goal that has drawn particular scrutiny, Ebrahim noted, “If you look at the disallowed goal, I’m sure VAR would have come in and have a look at it as well and either confirm or not.” However, he also clarified that the implementation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology is still in the discussion phase and that no additional information could be provided at this time.

Ebrahim further addressed rumors suggesting that VAR would be tested during the upcoming MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium. He dismissed these claims, stating, “Well, I don’t know where that news comes from, but ja, it’s not from us because then we were supposed to hear about it as well.”

As the football community awaits the findings from the referees’ review committee, the focus now shifts to the upcoming fixtures in the league, where both Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns will be eager to continue their pursuit of points in what is proving to be an exciting season in South African football.
