The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has clarified the alleged tampering with voting material in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal.

Videos and images are circulating on social media along with various unfounded allegations.

IEC WEIGHS IN ON HAMMARSDALE VIDEOS
According to the videos circulating on social media, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party members allegedly found people in African National Congress (ANC) regalia busy with the ballot boxes which were reportedly delivered at night at the municipal library in Mpumalanga township, Hammarsdale.

In a brief statement issued on Sunday, the IEC said video footage from Hammarsdale, Ethekwini in KZN shows the planned logistical arrangements and storage of election materials.

The Commission said the security provided was sufficient per plan but not aligned to a politically motivated group invasion.

“Additional measures have been taken to secure and reconcile the materials in these videos. At the voting station, ballots and all election material will still be opened in the presence of party agents, observers, and media,” the IEC said.

In the spirit of free and fair elections, the IEC must urgently address the ballot papers found by the MK Party in the Library in Hammarsdale in Kwa Zulu Natal.
