Dingaan Thobela’s 14 Children At War With Grandfather Over The Late Boxers Estate

Just two weeks after the burial of boxing legend Dingaan Thobela, a fierce battle has erupted over his estate. The 57-year-old former world champion, who passed away on April 29, 2024, was found in his Johannesburg apartment, leaving behind a legacy both in the ring and in his large family.According to reports from ZiMoja, Thobela’s 14 children are embroiled in a dispute with his father, Godfrey Thobela, over the division of his assets. The children are advocating for an equal split of the estate, while Godfrey has allegedly taken control of the assets, leading to tensions within the family.

The matter has escalated to the courts, with Godfrey Thobela being served with a summons. The children argue that their grandfather has unilaterally taken charge of the estate without considering their legal rights and the late boxer’s wishes.

“Dingaan was a family man who loved all his children dearly,” said a close family friend who wished to remain anonymous. “He would have wanted his estate to be shared fairly among his kids. This conflict is heartbreaking and goes against what he stood for.”

The legal battle adds a layer of complexity to what is already a difficult time for the family. Dingaan Thobela, known affectionately as “The Rose of Soweto,” was a celebrated figure in South African sports, earning titles such as the WBA Lightweight Champion and the WBC Super Middleweight Champion during his illustrious career.

Lawyers representing Thobela’s children have called for a thorough and transparent process in the division of the estate. “The children have a rightful claim to their father’s assets,” said Advocate Lerato Mokoena, who is representing the children. “We are seeking a court order to ensure that the estate is distributed equitably and in accordance with South African law.”

Meanwhile, Godfrey Thobela has maintained his stance, arguing that his actions are in the best interest of the family. “I am trying to manage the estate in a way that honors my son’s legacy and provides for his children,” Godfrey said in a brief statement. “This is a family matter, and I hope we can resolve it without further legal intervention.”

The court proceedings are expected to shed light on the details of Dingaan Thobela’s will, if one exists, and how the estate should be managed. The family remains hopeful that a resolution can be reached that respects the wishes of the late boxing icon and maintains family unity.

The public and fans of Dingaan Thobela are watching closely as this family dispute unfolds, reflecting the broader issues of inheritance and the management of estates in South African society. The outcome of this case may set a precedent for similar cases in the future, highlighting the importance of clear and legally binding wills.

As the court date approaches, the Thobela family must navigate their grief alongside this contentious legal battle, seeking a resolution that honors the memory of their beloved father and grandfather while ensuring fairness and justice for all involved.
