In a move that has stirred controversy and raised questions about political motivations, the African National Congress (ANC) under President Cyril Ramaphosa has reportedly refused to upgrade the fleet of vehicles used by former President Jacob Zuma. Instead, it has allocated Zuma the fleet of cars previously used by apartheid-era President F.W. de Klerk. This decision has ignited a storm of debate, with critics accusing the ANC of playing politics at the expense of a former leader’s dignity.

The decision not to upgrade Zuma’s fleet comes amid ongoing tensions within the ANC, particularly between factions aligned with Ramaphosa and those loyal to Zuma. Since his ousting from power in 2018, Zuma has remained a prominent figure within the party, exerting influence and challenging the leadership of his successor, Ramaphosa.

Reports indicate that Zuma had requested an upgrade to his fleet of vehicles, a standard provision afforded to former presidents. However, the ANC-led government allegedly denied this request, citing budgetary constraints and the need to prioritize other expenditures. Instead, Zuma was assigned the fleet previously used by de Klerk, the last president of apartheid-era South Africa.

Critics of the decision have condemned it as petty and vindictive, suggesting that the ANC is deliberately undermining Zuma’s legacy and seeking to humiliate him. By assigning him the cars associated with a symbol of apartheid, the ANC has been accused of sending a provocative message to Zuma and his supporters.

Responding to the backlash, ANC officials have defended the decision, emphasizing the need for fiscal responsibility and the equitable distribution of resources. They have denied any ulterior motives, insisting that the allocation of vehicles is based solely on practical considerations and available resources.

However, many remain unconvinced by these explanations, viewing the decision through the lens of South Africa’s complex political landscape. With the ANC facing internal divisions and external challenges, including a struggling economy and allegations of corruption, every decision is subject to scrutiny and interpretation.

As the debate rages on, the controversy surrounding Zuma’s fleet underscores the deep-seated tensions within the ANC and the broader implications for South Africa’s political future. Whether driven by fiscal prudence or political spite, the decision is likely to reverberate throughout the country’s political landscape, shaping perceptions and alliances in the years to come.
