The Gauteng health department has suspended five nurses from the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in South Africa amid allegations of gross negligence. This action follows an incident captured on video by a member of the public at the hospital’s emergency unit on February 25.
In the video, a distressing scene unfolds as a 28-year-old man sits on the floor, held by two individuals, while others urgently call for assistance from hospital staff. Witnesses express frustration, with one remarking, “dying in front of us while you are busy on the phone.” Despite pleas for help, the nurses are seen swiftly removing the patient from the area.
Sadly, the patient passed away in the hospital, prompting ongoing engagement between the facility management and the affected family to facilitate the redress process. Counseling services have also been extended to the family to provide support during this difficult time.
The Gauteng health department labeled the incident as “unfortunate,” particularly given the hospital’s efforts to enhance the quality of patient care. Initiatives like the ‘I Serve with A Smile’ campaign have been launched to improve staff attitudes and the overall quality of healthcare services provided.
