In a recent report, Fidelity Services Group emphasized the ongoing threat of vehicle hijackings, cautioning motorists to remain vigilant. While no notable increase was recorded during the recent festive season, the data suggests a potential spike in hijackings from January to February. Fidelity CEO Wahl Bartmann explained that hijackers strategically target specific vehicle models, with high demand currently observed for brands like Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford, and Nissan.

According to Fidelity’s SecureDrive data for 2023 and the new year, the most high-risk vehicle models include Toyota’s Fortuner and Hilux (GD-6 and D-4D), Corolla Cross, and Rav4, as well as Volkswagen Polo, Nissan NP200, and Ford Ranger. The list comprises both newer and older-generation Toyota Hilux and Fortuner models, while Fidelity notes that single cab and double cab versions of the Ford Ranger are particularly targeted. In the case of the Volkswagen Polo, the demand is skewed towards hatchback models.

Despite being specific targets, these vehicles are among the country’s top-selling models, potentially providing a level of safety in numbers due to their prevalence on the roads. Fidelity Services Group also issued a warning regarding utility vehicles and trucks, which are targeted for their cargo. Approximately 30% of stolen and hijacked vehicles are taken across the border into neighboring countries.

Bartmann highlighted that hijacking victims are frequently targeted near their homes or workplaces, emphasizing the concerning trend of victim kidnappings. Criminals use this tactic to locate tracking devices and delay reporting the crime. Bartmann’s advice to motorists facing a hijacking is clear: avoid resistance, as perpetrators are armed and may resort to violence without hesitation. He urged individuals not to confront assailants, considering the potential presence of additional perpetrators waiting out of sight.
