In an unexpected turn of events, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, a former Public Protector who is now an EFF MP, has been named Kant of the Year 2023. This distinct category honors those whose activities, despite falling short of Villain of the Year, have had a substantial societal influence.

Mkhwebane’s journey from State Security Agency analyst to the heart of the State Capture operation has been turbulent. Her contentious term, marred by scandals and litigation fights, peaked in 2022, when she was crowned Villain of the Year for mishandling government funds.

Her story took an unexpected turn as she went from being an impeached official to an EFF member. Surprisingly, EFF leader Julius Malema’s previous claims of being a “Gupta puppet” had little effect on Mkhwebane, who traded in her high-end Valentino Rockstud sandals for a domestic worker’s uniform before entering Parliament.

Mkhwebane, backed by lawyer Dali Mpofu, held unusual press briefings during her impeachment drama, emphasizing her victimhood narrative and loyalty to the country’s underprivileged. The farmers who were supposed to benefit from the contentious Estina dairy project were conspicuously absent from her advocacy.

Mkhwebane made headlines once more in 2023, this time for exposing WhatsApp texts and voice tapes implicating former Cabinet minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson. The subsequent proceedings took a fatal turn when Joemat-Pettersson died under mysterious circumstances.

Mkhwebane, although being down but not out, remains a formidable force set to participate in the 2018 election campaign. Mkhwebane’s presence is expected to be noticed as South Africa prepares for elections, potentially winning her a position in numerous 2024 categories.

Finally, whether viewed as a divisive person or a political enigma, Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s 2023 journey is unquestionably notable, earning her the title of Kant of the Year. Her activities continue to have an influence, leaving an everlasting impression on both organizations and individuals.
