Former Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane has issued a compelling challenge to President Cyril Ramaphosa and the African National Congress (ANC) in response to the outcome of the recently concluded Zimbabwean elections. Maimane further claims that, statistics from Stats South Africa reveal a staggering number—four million foreign nationals living in the country, with a substantial 40% (1.6 million) apparently originating from Zimbabwe.
According to Maimane, the underlying issue that exacerbates these challenges is the contentious nature of Zimbabwean elections. Dating back to 2002, 2008, 2018, and the most recent 2023 elections, there have been consistent concerns raised about the fairness and transparency of the electoral process.
Maimane’s challenge emphasizes the significance of South Africa’s role as a regional leader. He calls upon President Ramaphosa and the ANC to align with the SADC observer mission’s findings and take a vocal stance for change.
