The family of a man who was a militant fighting for development in his community in Groutville, KwaDukuza, lives in fear. It is said that he was shot and died.
Mr Mesuli Khuzwayo (29), was shot on Friday afternoon, in his blue VW Polo car, parked on the R102 road in eNtshawini. The family and people who were close to Khuzwayo, believe that his death is related to the dispute that broke out last Monday. It is said that Khuzwayo, who was also a developing businessman, wanted to continue the work that is said to have been suspended for the installation of speed bumps on the R102 road, which is famous for accidents in this area. It is suspected that the noise broke out when the local councilor stopped working because he said that the employees of the Department of Transport, did not inform about the plan and did not know the people working.
Those who were present when the incident happened said that eventually words were thrown, and they threatened Khuzwayo that it would not be the end of him. A relative of Khuzwayo, who asked for his name to be withheld to protect himself, said that they were a family and believed that Khuzwayo was being silenced by people who were threatening him. “He told us at home that someone had been threatening him in a fight. His death was something he had already felt in his blood because the day before he was killed he asked the owner of the cold store not to abandon him,” said a relative.
The local councillor, Mr Thubelihle Dube, denied that he was the one who stopped the work of the department. He said that it is not the dispute of the businessmen’s organization that has created the chaos in the area. Dube said the program has problems but the first phase has been completed, so if it continues, people will be rehired. “Right now, no work is being done because we are waiting for the road signs that show that work is being done on the ones that have been ordered, when they arrive, the work will continue,” explained Dube.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said KwaDukuza police are investigating a case of murder.
