Orlando Pirates has primarily focused a lot of their attention on one department within their current squad. Even though they’ve revamped some positions thus far, but the technical team wants to make the goalkeeping department is stronger than before. Also, they’ve realised that having a plenty of options does help the club with immense competition. This means that the players will have to prove their selves to the technical team and that’s something regarded as normal in football. When it was reported that the the Buccaneers are looking to rope in another show-stopper there was concerns in terns of if the club can afford numerous goalkeepers.
In most cases a team needs about three goalies in a whole season, whereby there will be their first choice and others will just provide cover. Especially, instances whereby there’s injuries, lack of form and fatigue. This time around, the Buccaneers has signed Sphamandla Gumende from Dondol Stars who has showed some impressive goalkeeping techniques in the ABC Motsepe League. It has earned him a move to the Soweto giants as he penned down a three-year deal at Mayfair. “We’re very proud of Sphamandla Gumede, last season he was supposed to join the Richards Bay DDC team but I had to fight his parents,” said the Dondol chairman Lordwick Makhura revealed to Phakaaathi.
According to reports, Gumede was supposed join another DStv Premiership side Richards Bay FC. However, it seems like Pirates were quick enough to with stop the negotiations with Bay. As they believed to have offered a better deal that can allow him to go change his life. “We are vindicated for that because Orlando Pirates is one of the biggest teams in the country and giving him a contract says a lot. We’re proud because it is a direct move from ABC Motsepe league to Pirates and it’s good for the boy and our brand as a club,” said Makhura speaking to the media.
