Thabo Mbeki, the former president of South Africa, has a tragic story to tell about his son, Monwabisi Kwanda Mbeki. Monwabisi went missing in 1990, shortly after Nelson Mandela was released from prison and apartheid was officially ended.

Monwabisi was born in 1959 to Thabo and Olive Mpahlwa, who were not married at the time. Thabo was a student activist at the time, and he was forced to flee South Africa in 1962. Olive raised Monwabisi on her own.


Monwabisi was a bright and promising young man. He attended the University of Cape Town, where he studied law. He was also active in the anti-apartheid movement. In 1990, Monwabisi was working as a lawyer in Durban. He was planning to return to South Africa to join the new government. However, he disappeared before he could make the trip. To this day, no one knows what happened to Monwabisi Mbeki. His disappearance is one of the great mysteries of South African history.




Thabo Mbeki has always maintained that he believes his son is still alive. He has said that he believes Monwabisi was abducted by the apartheid government. However, there is no evidence to support this claim. The mystery of Monwabisi Mbeki’s disappearance has haunted his family and friends for decades. It is a reminder of the dark days of apartheid, and it is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

Olive Mpahlwa never gave up hope that her son, Monwabisi, was still alive. She searched for him for many years, but she never found any answers. In 1994, when Thabo Mbeki became president of South Africa, Olive hoped that he would be able to help her find her son. However, Thabo was unable to provide any information about Monwabisi’s whereabouts.


Olive Mpahlwa died in 2015, still not knowing what happened to her son. Her story is a reminder of the pain and suffering that apartheid caused so many families.


Monwabisi Mbeki was a young man with a bright future ahead of him. He was a talented lawyer and a passionate anti-apartheid activist. His disappearance is a tragedy, but his legacy lives on. Monwabisi Mbeki’s story is a reminder of the importance of fighting for justice and equality. It is also a reminder of the power of the human spirit. Even in the face of great adversity, people can still find hope.
