A councillor for Inkatha Freedom Party survived a shooting last night. He is counting his blessings wherever he is after having a near death experience.
A Dumbe local municipality councillor of the Inkatha Freedom Party survived the shooting incident on Monday night. Councillor Zama Masondo was shot at while driving around a township in northern KwaZulu-Natal and the motive for the shooting is not yet known.
Kwa-Zulu Natal province is known for having a high number of political killings, and this is one issue which has remained a cause for concern. It is alleged that these hitmen who carry out tasks such as these are well paid and they also have lots of experience.
Many of these hitmen are hardly caught. Police minister, Bheki Cele recently stated that Kwa-Zulu Natal province has a higher number nationally of hotspots where mass murderers have happened. He said political killings remain one of the major issues they are battling with.
There has been so much political instability in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province which is caused by coalitions. Political parties are finding it difficult to work together, and this is why tensions have reached a boiling point.
On the same day that the Inkatha Freedom Party councillor survived a shooting, there had been an incident which took place. A media briefing which was held by Inkatha Freedom Party and ABC had turned chaotic after the deputy mayor had a heated exchange with one of the councillors.
The bone of contention was that one of the Inkatha Freedom Party councillors lied to the media, and this did not augur well with the National Freedom Party deputy mayor in the municipality.
This heated exchange has seen the coalition between ABC and IFP collapsing. Numerous municipalities in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province are on the verge of collapsing due to political parties failing to find each other on a number of issues. This is heavily impacting on service delivery to the community.
