The South African football fraternity woke up in sad news following the passing of all-time favourite Bafana coach Barker who has been sick for a couple of months.

Barker was born in 1944 and on his coaching career he managed to lead Bafana to their only Africa Cup of Nations title in 1996.

He is also the uncle of the current Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker who has been doing ver well for the Cape winelands side in recent seasons.

The coach remains the only one who has won the Africa Cup of Nations with the South African senior national squad.

In the early hours of Saturday 10 June his family confirmed his passing following month of sickness.

The coach has been in and out of hospital after he was diagnosed with lewy body dementia and unfortunately this time he did not make it.

The coach also took in charge of several clubs in the dstv premiership including the now-defunct Bidvest Wits after he was appointed as their head coach in 2013.
