Thabo Bester Escape: The NPA ‘drops’ Murder Charges Against Accused No.2

Dr. Nandipha Magudumana’s father Zolile Sekeleni (accused number two), left the Mangaung Magistrate’s court this morning visibly a relieved man after he was granted bail of R10,000 on the charges ranging from murder, obstruction of justice, and for aiding and abetting Thabo Bester’s escape from jail.

However, it appears Sekeleni’s day would be made even much better after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), took a rather surprising decision with regards to the charges that he faces.

According to a reliable report by Newzroom Afrika journalist Linda Mnisi, the state has decided to withdraw murder charges against Sekeleni, stating that they have found fresh proof that disproves his involvement in the murder at all.

This is in relation to the murder of an unknown person whose body was burnt inside Bester’s cell to disguise the Facebook rapist’s daring escape.

In essence, this implies that the 65-year-old once respected educator will only face a handful of charges, and even if he were found guilty on each of them, he might get a lesser sentence.

Although Sekeleni might count himself lucky that the most serious of his charges has been withdrawn, there will certainly be a great deal of pain in the family as his daughter, Dr. Nandipha, was denied bail, and she will be expected to appear in court again next month on the 3rd, which ironically marks exactly a year anniversary of Bester’s escape from prison.

In one’s opinion, the NPA, which recently withdrew all charges against all the accused in the murder case of Hillary Gardee, is notorious for bungling high-profile cases; therefore, it would have been rather wiser for them to give a bit of time to make a rigorous investigation instead of withdrawing the murder charge against Sekeleni barely a couple of days after his arrest.

Hence, the question would be, why was he charged with murder in the first place?

What do you make of this development?
