Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns have learned their CAF Champions League group stage opponents following the draw conducted in Cairo on Friday.
Chiefs have qualified for their first ever group stage of a continental competition after overcoming Cameroon’s PWD Bamenda and Angola’s Primeiro de Agosto in the two preliminary rounds.
Amakhosi have now been drawn alongside Angola’s Petro Altelico, Guinea’s Horoya and Morocco’s Wydad Athletic in Group C.
Meanwhile, Sundowns’ appearance in this season’s group stage marks their sixth successive edition at this stage of the competition, which they last won back in 2016.
The Brazilians got past Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy in the preliminary rounds after being exempted from the first preliminary round by virtue of their success in recent seasons.
They now find themselves up against CR Belouizdad of Algeria, Al Hilal of Sudan and TP Mazembe of DR Congo in Group B.
The round-robin phase is scheduled to kick-off on February 12-13, with Chiefs starting out with a trip to Wydad and Sundowns hosting Al Hilal, and will then conclude by April 9-10.
The draw for the 2020/21 Total CAF Champions League Group Stage was done at CAF Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt on Friday 8 January 2021.
The draw, conducted by CAF Head of competitions Khlaed Nassar, assisted by Egypt’s legend Hossam Ghaly, produced some thrilling pairings in the way to the continent’s premier club competition’s finals.
Last season’s title holders Al Ahly of Egypt will face the opposition of AS Vita, Simba and El Merriekh.
