Older Android and iPhone devices will no longer support the latest version of the WhatsApp, forcing owners to update their mobile operating systems or for many, to buy a new smartphone.
The makers of the app advised that users should update their devices to the latest versions of their operating systems. Old smartphone users who have not upgraded to iOS 9 or above, or Android 4.0.3 or above will not be able to run WhatsApp from the new year.
Which phones will work and which won’t?
Any phone not running the abovementioned systems will no longer be able to open or operate the Facebook-owned app. This means all iPhone models up to the iPhone 4 will be unable to support WhatsApp, as these phones are not capable of updating to iOS 9.
Similarly, if someone is using a Samsung Galaxy S2, will not be able to use WhatsApp.
Other popular phones that will stop running the app. include HTC Sensation, Samsung Google Nexus S, Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, LG Optimus 2X, Samsung Galaxy S I9000, and HTC Desire S.
If you want to see what software your device is using, check the settings section. For iPhone users, this can be found under Settings > General > Software update.
