– Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has noted an increase in Covid-19 cases to 45 973
– The number of fatalities increased to 952, while recoveries stood at just over 24 000
– While SA recorded 44 new deaths Mkhize observed that the fatality rate remains below the global average
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has confirmed the latest Covid-19 statistics on Saturday evening.
In a statement issued by the Health Ministry, Mkhize noted 44 more fatalities as a result of the virus:
“As of today, the cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is 45 973, the total number of deaths is 952 and the total recoveries is 24 258.”

The minister provided some insight into the deaths, reporting that the Western Cape recorded the highest number of fatalities:
“Regrettably, we report more 44 more COVID-19 related deaths: 25 in the Western Cape, 6 in KZN, 7 in Gauteng and 6 in the Eastern Cape. This brings the total national deaths to 952. We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who treated the deceased. Although the numbers of COVID-19 related deaths are rising, our mortality rate remains at 2%, well below the global average of 6%.”
Some hope was found in the number of citizens who managed to overcome their battle against the virus:
“The recoveries to date are 24 258 – this translates to a recovery rate of 52,8%.” The breakdown per province is as follows:
