The money was allegedly erroneously deposited into the student’s account by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). The matter first crept up when a Twitter user expressed shock that his friend had received so much money from NSFAS.

The NSFAS clearly hadn’t caught wind of the error yet, as its social media account asked for the student’s details.
Hi @Kgetsa275 Please may you DM us the persons details ASAP !!!!! Thanks TQ #NSFASSquad

Details were forwarded to NSFAS, but tweeps were shocked that the matter had remained undiscovered by NSFAS until now. They also wanted to know why NSFAS couldn’t identify the account itself and who such a large amount was actually meant for.
