Teams: Kaizer Chiefs v Royal Eagles
Date: 08 February 2020
Venue: FNB Stadium
After suffering a loss in last season’s final, Kaizer Chiefs begin their Nedbank Cup journey with a clash at home to GladAfrica Championship outfit Royal Eagles.
The match is set to kickstart at 18h00.
Amakhosi have been out of competitive action for two weeks since a last-gasp 1-0 win over Golden Arrows that consolidated top spot in the Absa Premiership.
Despite last season’s shock loss to TS Galaxy in the final, the Glamour Boys are the most successful team in the tournament with 13 titles, although they have won the competition only once in 2013 under the current sponsors.
Coach Ernst Middendorp has won this competition with Amakhosi in his first stint in 2006 while it was still known as the Absa Cup.
Meanwhile, Eagles are struggling in the GladAfrica Championship, languishing at the bottom of the log and are in danger of being relegated to the third-tier.
Eagles were last active in the Nedbank Cup back in 2018 where they reached the last 16 before they were knocked out by eventual finalists Maritzburg United.
Here’s how they line up:
Chiefs: Khune, Frosler, Ntiya-Ntiya, Cardoso, Mathoho, Katsande, Maluleka, Baccus, Castro, Manyama, Nurkovic.
Subs: Akpeyi, Sasman, Mashiane, Mphahlele, Billiat, Akumu, Parker
Eagles: Maova, Kalake, Klaas, Tema, Mashau, Msomi, Ntsundwana, Mdluli, Seanego, Hlongwa, Maruping.
Subs: Dlamini, Kizza, Zikalala, Matima, Ntswane, Maluleke, Mongae.
