The accused murderer of slain DUT student Sandile Ndhlovu made his second court appearance at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Msizi Mbutho (29) who is the alleged suspect faces charges of murder and robbery.
The court was shocked to learn that the accused had struck the victim on the head with a hammer during the attack, whilst it was initially reported that the victim was stabbed.
The accused did not plead and did not want to apply for bail. The case has been adjourned until the end of the month as the court awaits Ndhlovu’s final post mortem results.
The 29-year-old who is said to also be a student at the university was arrested on Monday last week by the SAPS, where they found Ndhlovu’s phone in his possession.
Sandile Ndhlovu was allegedly attacked and robbed in a lecture hall at the Durban University of Technology, Steve Biko campus in September this year. He later succumbed to his injuries a few days after the attack, in a Durban hospital.
The 18-year old, first-year Industrial Engineering student’s death sparked huge safety concerns amongst the students of DUT and saw many peaceful protests break out.
The sentencing of the accused is due to commence on the 27th of November 2019.
