The University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) subjects and broad subject areas, amongst those of 1 130 other institutions, have been recently ranked by the 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
The institution outclassed in the subjects of Development Studies (top 100), Geography (top 200), Law (300) and English Language & Literature (300).
In the broad subject areas, UJ’s Arts & Humanities (364), Social Sciences & Management (401–450), and Natural Sciences (451–500) subject areas made their ways to the ranking.
“These results are yet another important endorsement of UJ’s growing international reputation!” said the VC, Prof Tshilidzi Marwala, in a letter to students and staff on 9th March 2018.
“I would like to extend my compliments to the staff and students in the Faculties of Humanities, Science, Law and the College of Business and Economics for making this accomplishment possible,” he added.
The University’s spokesperson, Esterhuizen Herman, said in an email response that the rankings are a result of UJ’s main aim in exemplifying a post-apartheid university, which is possible from a Pan-African approach.
Nonetheless, “UJ does not pursue success in the rankings as an end in itself. But the huge efforts that have gone into being an excellent university have had the spin-off of recognition in various ranking systems,” Herman added
The 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject process assessed 48 subjects, in five broad subject areas, from the 1 130 institutions which made the final cut of more than 4 500 establishments from 151 countries across the globe.
